Years 7, 8 and 9 Football - Thursday 28th September9 October 2023 (by admin) |
There were mixed fortunes for WHS teams against Woldgate, with Years 7 and 9 both losing their matches 0-7, while Year 8 fared better with a 4-3 win.
Despite the losses for Year 7 and 9, there were encouraging signs for both teams.
For Year 7, it was their first ever game - having only had one training session together. Meanwhile, Year 9 faced a very strong and athletic side. Jack Law forced their goalkeeper into some very good saves, while WHS also hit the post and crossbar on a number of occasions,
Year 8: Withernsea 4 – Woldgate 3
The action began right from kick-off, with Woldgate on the attack and pressing. Withernsea remained composed and managed to change the momentum. With just 5 minutes played, Archie put a nice cross in and it found Beedham on the edge of the box to have a shot and hit the back of the net.
Withernsea were in the swing of things now and just 7 minutes later, Zeb took a chance at another long-range shot from near the halfway line and his finesse saw the ball glide into the back of the net. Withernsea was now up by 2. However, Woldgate were starting to find their feet and were putting pressure on Withernsea.
Unfortunately, they were able to produce an unstoppable goal past Ben, who was putting in some solid saves so far. Woldgate were able to find another goal just before half time. Nimo, Macca and Millie were working really well at the back to keep Woldgate from taking the lead.
Into the second half and both teams were fighting to take the lead. Lily and Archie were both driving up the wing, making good link up play with Macca and Millie. Withernsea were able to get the ball into a dangerous place for Woldgate, giving George the opportunity to have a shot.
The shot by George was blocked by a defender, but luckily deflected into their own net. Withernsea were now back in the lead. This didn’t stop Woldgate from keeping the pressure on and the midfield (rotating between Zeb, Dylan, Sevie and Cole) were putting in a lot good challenges to keep Woldgate from getting into the final third.
Unfortunately, Woldgate were yet again able to find an equaliser making it 3-3. With just 9 minutes left, the ball fell to Sam’s feet in Woldgate's area and he was able to hit it through defenders, putting Withernsea back into the lead. The action didn’t end there as Woldgate were keen to find another equaliser. Ben made a cracking diving effort to keep Withernsea in the lead.
With 30 seconds left, Woldgate had a corner which was sent in and allowed Woldgate to have a shot, hitting the post. Some more shots were sent in afterwards, all being deflected by Withernsea (who were all back and defending now). We were able to keep Woldgate from scoring, keeping the score line 4-3 to Withernsea.
Against a very good Woldgate side, the players did a really good job at defending and taking the chances when they were presented. Not forgetting Ben in goal who made some outstanding saves.
Well done to the following students: Ben Hunter, Macauley Kitcher, Charlie-George Nimmo, Millie Campbell, Archie Eldon-Thomson, Lily Barker, Zeb Gant, Dylan Nicholson, Sevie Farren, Cole Purdy, Sam Jennison, George Stephenson-Cass and Luke Beedham
Man of the Match: Ben Hunter
And finally… a big thank you to Tom Graham for refereeing the match (despite not having a kit, stopwatch or whistle). Well done, Tom!
