Year 8/9 Rugby: Hornsea 22 - Withernsea 24

9 October 2023 (by admin)

On Thursday 21st September, the Year 8/9 boys’ rugby team travelled to Hornsea for the first game of the season.

A lack of players at Hornsea resulted in a ten-a-side match, and the game started scrappily. Hornsea took the lead 6-0 before the WHS boys hit back after some strong carries from Grantham, Robinson and Owens got us upfield. A delicate kick to the corner was grounded by Alfie Foster to bring the score 6-6. This remained the same until half time.

In the second half, WHS started strong and James Grantham powered over with four men on his back to give us a 12-6 lead. Some neat play followed, allowing Hinchcliffe to ground the ball to make it 18-6. Then, for the final ten minutes, the Hornsea onslaught began - scoring three quickfire tries to lead 18-22 with two minutes remaining.

A smart kick-off by Law meant we regained the ball. From the second tackle, Robinson steamed onto the ball to level the game 22-22 meaning Law had a conversion to win the game. Now if anyone knows Jack, they'll know he likes the limelight! With the pressure on he nailed the kick resulting in a 24-22 win.

Well done to the following students: Jack Law, Alfie Foster, Brogan Hinchcliffe, James R Grantham, Regey Waterhouse, Logan Betts, Sonny Robinson, Harry Fletcher, Oliver Thomas, Jayden Newton, Ben Liddell, Sam Boothroyd, Max Curtis Davis and Nathan Owens
