Visiting the site of Amazon’s new £150-million fulfilment centre at Melton West Business Park, a group of fifteen Year 10 Engineering students were afforded the opportunity to meet and interact with representatives from different backgrounds within the engineering sector including Design Engineers, Project Managers, and a Health and Safety Coordinator.

Each representative offered an insight into their role and spoke about the vast array of opportunities for young people looking to access careers in construction in the local area and beyond. Students were able to see the impact of these roles for themselves as they viewed the site up-close, witnessing the different skills, contractors and elements involved in the project at work.

Leading the trip was Head of Design Technology, Amy Norris, who said: “It was a very insightful day with lots of opportunities for our students to learn about Engineering and careers in various fields. Our students represented the school well. They asked lots of questions and showed appreciation to all the staff who took their time to speak with them. It's been a lovely day and we are already planning to go back and see the site progress in a few months’ time. A massive thank you to TSL Construction for having us.”

Among the students on the trip was Matthew Beedham who said, “It was a nice, inspirational day out and we learnt a lot about the different sectors within Engineering.”

Fellow student, Laura Stott, added: “The trip has given me an insight into the day-to-day life of an Engineer and it’s something I think I’d love to do!”.

Meanwhile, Lewis Wheat said: “I learnt a lot about the world of Engineering. Everyone was really helpful and my favourite part was seeing the site in action.”

Currently under construction next to Amazon’s existing delivery station, the new fulfilment centre will occupy an estimated 52,000 sq m of space - with the development estimated to create the potential for up to 2,000 new jobs.

Viki Foster, Careers Leader at Withernsea High School, said: “It is a vital part of students’ careers education that they are given opportunities to explore the many and varied career paths that are available to them. Companies such as Amazon are global brands with local operations and it is therefore beneficial for our students to investigate such opportunities on their doorstep. I have no doubt that today has helped them to start thinking about their next steps and post-16 options.”
