Cup final success for Withernsea High’s U14 Girls’ Football Team.18 June 2024 (by admin) |
On Monday, 17th June, Withernsea High School’s U14 (Year 8 and 9) Girls’ Football team travelled to Hull’s St Mary’s College to represent the school in the U14 Humberside Small Schools Cup.
Mr Mountain, Acting Head of PE, has provided the following match report:
“The game started well and Withernsea were on the front foot right from the beginning, with a ball over the top setting Wilson free to show her pace - getting away from the defenders to calmly strike the ball past the goalkeeper to make the score 1-0.
“Shortly afterwards, St Mary's had their first chance from distance but Clubley did well to catch the ball. Withernsea were causing problems, with Barker, Wilson and Anderson-Richardson looking threatening but not finding the finishing touches to add to the 1-0 advantage. The second goal did finally come though when a long-range free kick was taken by Barker and it took a huge deflection, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. 2-0.
"Stocks provided lots of energy in midfield, stopping any breaks from the opposition, while Thompson delivered some great passes. These led to a third goal when she played Barker through, who was then fouled and stepped up cooly to dispatch the penalty into the top corner. Withernsea passed up a few more chances before half time and the score remained 3-0.
"The second half began the same way, with Hall going on a run from her own half - beating six players in the process, but unfortunately putting the chance wide. A fourth goal did come though, and this time it was Barker again who got the ball and cut in on her right foot and powered it passed the goalkeeper to make it 4-0.
"A fifth goal followed soon after, with some neat team play setting Wilson free down the left to exquisitely lift the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper to make it 5-0. The defence of Blyth, Campbell, Courtney-Wilson and Collins was well and truly on top, stopping any attack as soon as it started to threaten - and they never looked like conceding a goal.
"A sixth and final goal came when Campbell made a run forward, doing a one-two with Barker and then calmly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper. The game finished 6-0. It was another great achievement and the girls have now won the trophy back-to-back.
"Congratulations to the team whose performance and behaviour were both impeccable."
