Year 10 students have been working on garden-themed projects in Engineering this term. Firstly, making a bird box and then a gardening trowel.
Head of DT, Mrs Norris, said: "For the birdbox, they forged a hook and used the lathe to make a handle - adding a knurling pattern for grip. They followed an Engineering drawing to make each of the wooden faces and joined them using screw joints. Accuracy was key to ensure it all fit together correctly.
“Students each got to have a go at welding when creating the handle for their trowel. For most of them, it was their first experience. To create the spade, they made a card template and then cut the shape with tin snips onto mild steel. They then refined the shape using files and formed the shape.
"After studying ergonomics, they used their knowledge to shape the handle carefully ensuring ease of use and user comfort. They then personalised their design using stains and paints colours of their choosing.
“I am very proud of the students for their excellent work and attention to detail.”
