Year 11 Football: Withernsea 4 – Wolfreton 3

12 October 2023 (by admin)

The game started at a fast pace, with Withernsea slow to get into their stride. Napier was forced into a great early save and the defence of Frith, Sleight and Coyne under pressure but keeping the attackers at bay.

Withernsea grew into the game and Furley put two near crosses in from the right-hand side but nobody was fortunate to get on the end of them. Then, midway through the half, as the game was becoming a real midfield battle, Richardson smashed a volley from 30yards, looping over the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

Withernsea doubled their lead from a Palmer long throw, with the ball falling to Downing who smashed it into the far bottom corner to double the home side’s lead. The game was nearly 3-0 when Duplock showed some great footwork weaving between three men, but unfortunately the keeper was equal to his shot. Just before half time, Wolfreton were given a lifeline with a well-worked move falling to a man at the back post to smash home

Out came Wolfreton in the second half, buoyed by the late goal, but Withernsea struck first against the run of play when a long ball caused issues in the defence and pressure from Leckonby meant the ball fell to Downing to smash home 3-1.

Withernsea were then pegged back again, conceding a goal that is probably better off not discussed. 3-2.

More pressure came from Wolfreton, with Windas doing well at the back. Frith and Sleight, with Barker and Furley, allowed the opposition no time or space with excellent defending. With 5 minutes left, Withernsea made it 4-2 after a long ball forward ended up at Leckonby’s feet. However, there was still time for Wolfreton to get another goal to make for an entertaining last minute, but the boys managed to hold on and gain a 4-3 win.

Well done to the following: Harvey Napier, Harrison Furley, Zach Garbutt, Alex Coyne, Matthew Sleight, Liam Frith, Henry Barker, Connor Bradley, Ben Richardson, Freddie Windas, Oscar Duplock, Robbie Leckonby, William Downing and Ashton Palmer.

Goals: Downing (x2), Richardson and Leckonby
