Year 11 Football: Withernsea 5 – Hessle 29 October 2023 (by admin) |
It was a fairly even first 10 minutes with neither side really gaining the upper hand, but the game sprung into life when Barker unleashed a thunderbolt into the far top corner from 35yards.
Withernsea were then on top, creating some good chances with Leckonby forcing a good save from the goalkeeper. At 20 minutes, a substitution saw Downing replace Leckonby - making an immediate impact by racing clear of the defenders to chip the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Garbutt, Graham, Frith, Furley and Barker kept the Hessle attackers at bay, with the pacey duo of Duplock and Downing causing all sorts of problems. Just before the half time whistle, Hessle got a goal back from a tidy finish cutting in from the right.
Moving into the second half, Hessle were pushing forwards to try and grab an equaliser. The game became stretched as Richardson grabbed his first goal from the edge of the box to make it 3-1. Palmer then rattled the crossbar with a great header from a Barker free kick before Hessle pulled a goal back from a speculative long-range effort to make it 3-2.
Hessle really began to apply the pressure now and forced Napier into a top class save from close range. This seemed to wake Withernsea up again, with Richardson, Windas, Palmer and Bradley gaining the upper hand in midfield. A through ball set Duplock away and his neat pull back found Richardson who smashed the ball home to make it 4-2.
Withernsea weren't done there, and neither was the Richardson show! When he got the ball from 25 yards out one thing was on his mind and his shot found the top corner and sealed the game, and his birthday, 5-2.
It was an excellent team performance and WHS battled to the end. Every single player deserves credit.
